9th Nowember 2011 Darjeeling tea became the first product from India to be protected as geographical indication in the EU. The Tea Board of India made a comment in Tea & Coffee trade journal, January 2012:

Embargo is lifted

In a meeting held last nigt (29th March) in Siliguri between the representatives of Darjeeling Tea Association and GJM (party for „Gorkha Land“), CPRM and Congress, it was decided the embargo would be lifted from 63 gardends gathered under DTA. The remaining 23 gardens still have the tea embargo.

GJM and DTDPLU insist on wage rise. Planters argue the wage rise is a timebound process. DTDPLU enforced a clampdown on he despatch of first flush of Darjeeling tea, demanding minimum wage 120 indian rupees per day.
